Hypnotherapy involves deep relaxation. Many people are pleasantly surprised to learn that hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of consciousness that one enters and leaves all of the time.
It feels very much like day dreaming, yet when utilised in therapy can have a powerful, impact on one’s ability to overcome personal obstacles, behaviours and limiting beliefs. Amongst its uses are medical, dentistry, professional sports and education.
There are a number of frequently asked questions about hypnosis and some common myth’s and misconceptions. I will attempt to answer a few you may have.
Hypnosis is completely safe and you can’t get stuck in a state of hypnosis. It is not a truth serum and you cannot be made to do anything against your will. You will not be asleep, but are likely to feel very relaxed. It may be comforting to learn that you will be aware and in control throughout the session and can terminate it any time you wish. Any normal person (without severe mental disorders) can be hypnotised, even if you consider yourself to be too strong-minded.
In the relaxed state of hypnosis, it is possible for the therapist to communicate with the unconscious mind where all of your habits reside. That is why it can be so quick and easy. So if you want to make changes to an unwanted behaviour or limiting belief and are motivated to do so, your Hypnotherapist can facilitate those changes for you.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
The new science of NLP has helped people all over the world to discover their true potential. It can take Hypnotherapy to even greater levels of effectiveness.
We all experience the world through our senses in different ways, translating sensory information into thought processes which helps us formulate our own ‘Map of the world’ or ‘Map of reality’. This in turn activates our neurological system that affects, physiology, emotions and behaviour.
We couldn’t possibly process every piece of information we receive in any one second, so we Delete, Distort and Generalise the information presented to us through a system of filters in order to create our own maps.
This is why two people having the same experience can see it in totally different ways, stimulating differing behaviour. In this sense, it is easy to imagine how a person can become stuck-in or restricted by their past experiences which affects their ability to perform. Fear of public speaking is a prime example of how a person’s perception or map of reality can affect them adversely.
Much of NLP work is performed in the waking state and in essence NLP is a technology, which empowers you with the tools and abilities to change anything about your life that does not reflect who you are today.
NLP does not change the world, it simply helps you change the way that you observe or perceive the world. NLP helps you open up possibilities toward building a different ‘Map of the World’, targeted at helping you to be more effective in your personal or business life.
